In regions where extreme weather is the norm rather than the exception, fire safety becomes a critical operational priority. In March 2025, Tesmec Australia reaffirmed its commitment to workplace safety by organising a first response fire instruction session for all team members currently working on one of its major construction sites in Queensland.
Responding to a high-risk environment
Given the consistently high temperatures and the fact that the fire danger rating in the area frequently reaches “extreme”, it is essential that all personnel are equipped to react appropriately in the event of a fire. This tailored training was designed to provide teams with the practical knowledge and reflexes required to respond swiftly and effectively to such emergencies.
The session was held on 25 March 2025, directly on site, allowing for maximum participation and real-world contextualisation. Up to 25 employees were trained per one-hour session, ensuring the content remained interactive and action-oriented.
Key objectives of the fire response training
The program was led by certified fire safety trainers and followed national safety standards. The session focused on the following key areas:
Understanding the chemistry of fire and the process of combustion
Locating and identifying fire extinguishers within the workplace
Learning the six different classes of fire and the correct use of firefighting equipment for each
Participating in a live simulation to practise extinguishing a fire using the appropriate extinguisher
Applying the P.A.S.S. acronym (Pull, Aim, Squeeze, and Sweep.) in the operation of fire equipment
Knowing the proper procedures for evacuating personnel
Recognising the signs of fire or smoke as early as possible
Understanding the assembly points and actions required during an evacuation
Tailored training for project-specific needs
At Tesmec Australia, we recognise that no two worksites are alike. That’s why our fire safety training sessions are adapted to reflect the specific risks, infrastructure, and emergency protocols of each project. This approach ensures that training is not only compliant with regulatory standards, but truly relevant and effective for our teams in the field.
Building a culture of prevention and preparedness
This training session forms part of a broader safety strategy implemented across all Tesmec Australia operations. Beyond technical expertise and quality execution, we place equal emphasis on creating a culture of vigilance and readiness among our teams.
Empowering our personnel to act with confidence in high-risk situations is an investment — not just in safety, but in the long-term resilience of our projects.
